Enthusiastic upcoming artist who paints contemporary acrylic abstracts Nedda Riva Zaharelos is an Italian born Canadian who is presently living in the Greater Toronto Area.
Her love and study for art and design started at a young age in her native city of Milan and continued in Toronto graduating in Sculpture Installation at the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1998.
Recently her new passion has been for painting. She is a self taught painter with an interest in people, culture and abstraction. Her main objective and interests are always about shape and forms with the challenge of creating the illusion of depth and space.
Nedda was a professional member of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario since 1973 and is presently an ARIDO Life Member.
She is also a member of several Artist Collectives; this connection has created the opportunity for her to be juried into several group exhibitions, most recently:
2020 Arthur Show. “Art Guild of Scarborough” Toronto “Cervino”
2020 Eight Annual Juried Show Colborne Gallery “A State of Complexity”
2020 Window Open 2020 Markham Group of Artist. “A State of Complexity” (Honorable Mention)
2019 Pine Ridge Arts Council juried show. Ajax . “Glacier” (Juror Choice)
2019 Art Guild of Scarborough Toronto. “Cervino” (Special Merit)
2019 Art Guild of Scarborough Toronto. “Conscious Vibration” (Special Merit)
2019 “Works by Nedda M. Riva Zaharelos” Fairview Library – Toronto
Her pursuit for beauty, design, composition and structure is still very present in all of her artworks.

Most of the time my inspiration comes from interacting with the canvas; it’s like talking with a friend, sometimes we get along sometimes we fight. I start with an idea and as I work on it, it develops and quite often in a completely different direction.
When I work on a painting, whether on an abstract or a figure based piece, my main objectives and interests are always about shapes and forms. I apply layers of glaze over layers of markings over layers of transparent paints trying to create the illusion of depth and space. I am aware of composition, balance and try to work with a simple colour palette. Every painting is a challenge and I love it when the final product says something of me that engages the viewer.
While Painting abstract paintings I engage 2 very important and different aspects of my practice. At first the white canvas invites me to play with marks and colours enjoying freedom and feeling the fun that I used to have as a child. While Painting abstract paintings I engage 2 very important and different aspects of my practice. At first the white canvas invites me to play with marks and colours enjoying freedom and feeling the fun that I used to have as a child. I am fascinated by circular motions, circles and curves that intersect with straight lines and squared shapes.
As the canvas develops and takes a presence of its own I start to see images in the painting that challenge my imagination. This is the beginning of the interaction/debate between me and the canvas. This is the creative part, in reality the challenge is between “me and me”.
Both phases are an important part of my “artmaking” each giving me a sense of pleasure and a feeling of achievement.
I was asked where my inspiration comes from: I guess the inspiration is within me and I never know where it takes me.
